The German University in Cairo is an Egyptian Private University, established in cooperation with the German State Universities of Ulm and Stuttgart, under the patronage of the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education, the Ministry of Science, Research and Arts, State of Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany. Situated at the ancient city of Cairo, the GUC’s mission is to achieve excellence in teaching and research.
The Faculty of Applied Science and Arts enrolls 1,250 students across three design majors: Graphic, Product and Media Design. The Design Workshops are an interdisciplinary department and are a fundamental part of the faculty. They provide an introduction to basic craft skills and are an important resource, where students conduct experiments, realize assignments, create design prototypes, and participate in research.
Responsibilities:
The Head of Design Workshops is responsible for the units Bookbinding, Ceramics, Illustration Techniques, Letterpress, Modelmaking/Rapid Prototyping, Molding and Wood.
He/she collaborates with the workshop supervisors in all aspects of workshop management, thereby expanding the capacity, efficiency and creative profile of the Design Workshop department. He/she monitors safety and health regulations, plans workshop investments and supervises material purchase. Tasks include the strategic development of the workshops in alignment with the Faculty Management. The Head of Department initiates contacts to suppliers and industry, optimizes existing workshops and arranges maintenance needed. Sharing knowledge, facilitating teaching and training needs of students and staff are pivotal to the Design Workshops’ success.
Experience/skills:
• Hands-on manager with substantial professional and organizational experience. Training in a craft or study of a design related discipline and a connection to design are a plus.
• Knowledgeable about current and future approaches within the field of workshops related to to Graphic, Media and Product Design.
• Motivated to gain experience within an intercultural academic environment and willing to develop own profile at the intersection of craft and technology.
• Excellent interpersonal communication and writing skills in English, which is the teaching language. Ability to work well with colleagues from diverse cultural backgrounds, professional experience and aesthetic sensibilities.
• Outstanding management skills, including the ability to meet deadlines, communicate and motivate effectively.
• An interest in working collaboratively within the GUC and with external partners towards the development of shared projects.
Requirements:
Title will be assigned to successful applicants based on the highest degree achieved, industrial experience, teaching and research experience.
