Civil engineering is a unique engineering discipline that is always interwoven with great civilizations and mankind achievement. Through history, civil engineers have designed and built monumental structures such as; the Great Pyramids in Egypt, Pont du Gard in France, the Iron Bridge in England, the Eiffel Tower in France, the Akashi Kaikyō Bridge in Japan, the Petronas Twin towers in Malaysia, and Burj Khalifa in the United Arab Emeritus. Civil engineers have contributory roles in the sustainability and advancement of civil societies. Moreover, civil engineers systematically provide efficient mitigation and innovative solutions meeting society needs and aspirations. According to the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), which is the world’s first engineering society founded in 1818: “Civil engineering is all about people. It’s the work that civil engineers do to develop and improve the services and facilities we, the public, all use. We rely on civil engineering every day for a variety of things: from supplying energy and clean water to our homes, to processing and recycling our waste, to finding solutions to problems like pollution.”

Civil engineers; plan, design, construct, operate, and maintain the built environment for modern life. They help protect the society from natural disasters, e.g. floods, earthquakes and hurricanes, as well as manage natural resources. A civil engineer should demonstrate good work ethics and maintain responsibility to the public. Civil engineers are fortunate since they design and build their own monuments (high-rise buildings, bridges, towers, skyscrapers, subway stations, hydroelectric dams, tunnels, water supply networks, irrigation systems, roads, transportation systems, airports, industrial facilities, energy facilities, utility lines, etc.) with the public consent. The work of a civil engineer aims to satisfy the following goals:

  1. Improving the quality of life
  2. Providing functionality and serviceability
  3. Ensuring safety of the individual and the society
  4. Balancing time, integrity and cost
  5. Protecting the environment
  6. Guaranteeing sustainability
  7. Delivering aesthetic and style

The Civil Engineering Program prepares graduates to seamlessly join the civil engineering profession and function successfully. The program offers a suite of common core courses that exposes students to the width of civil engineering discipline. In addition, the program offers another suite of sub-discipline courses and electives to be selected by students to be further expose them to the depth of civil engineering sub-disciplines. Major specializations are offered in areas of construction management, structural engineering, transportation sciences engineering, and water resources and treatment engineering.

In alignment with GUC education and research strategy, the Civil Engineering Program encourages and guides students to conduct inter-disciplinary projects and junior engineering research. Moreover, the program promotes postgraduate studies among students and teaching assistants, and encourages academic research among faculty members. The Civil Engineering Program owns one of the most current and comprehensive computer-based and experimental clusters of civil engineering labs. All labs are outfitted with popular and advanced civil engineering software, highly developed analog and digital field measurement instruments, as well as, state of the art lab testing equipment. The Civil Engineering program; as with the case with all academic programs offered by the GUC; has high caliber faculty members selected with care from academic professionals from Germany and Egypt to lecture and guide students in all program related academic and discipline activities.


The Civil Engineering Program, with its four majors is organized as 4+1 academic program and comply with Bologna Agreement to produce compatibility an comparability with the academic study programs in the German and European Universities. This program organization allows the students to finish 240 ECTS of their academic study at end of the 8th semester by successfully completing all the required courses (210 ECTS), the bachelor thesis for 3 months (15 ECTS), and the internship of at least 3 months (15 ECTS). Accordingly, the students of the Civil Engineering Program are qualified to earn an international bachelor degree, which is Bologna compliant, at the end of the 8th semester or 4 years.

Also, by successfully completing the courses of the 9th and 10th semesters (1 year) - equivalent to 60 ECTS - the students would be qualified for an international master degree, which is Bologna complaint, by completing a master thesis equivalent to 30 ECTS within the following 6 months.

After completing the 4+1 study program, the students would earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering, with specialty in one of the program’s four majors, certifiable by the Supreme Council of Universities (SCU) in Egypt.
