Special Topics in Reinforced Concrete Design - Offered to 10th semester Structural Major (CIS 1003)

Description

This Course is offered to 10th semester Structural Major
The purpose of the course is to present special and advanced topics about the mechanics and limit states design procedures of reinforced concrete structures that are not discussed in other RC design courses. This course requires good knowledge and skills of the structural analysis methods, and the RC design methods as presented in the core courses of RC design and prestressed concrete. It provides the students with advanced analysis and design methods to be used in practice and research for reinforced concrete structures. Additionally, it permits the students to improve their skills for using commercial software packages for the analysis and design of RC structures, preparing reinforcement detailing, and practicing technical reports and presentations. The course contributes to the knowledge and skills required by the civil engineers by selecting from the following topics of engineering science and design: Failure theories; Cracking limit state; Fatigue of RC structures; Strut-and-tie model; Yield line theory of slabs; Openings in RC members and reinforcement details; Design and detailing of elevated tanks, underground tanks, deep beams, corbels; Design and detailing of shear walls and RC cores; Design and detailing of footings and raft foundations; Folded plats and shells; Finite element modelling of RC structures; RC and hybrid material bridges; Lateral load RC resisting systems; Non-destructive testing of concrete; Introduction to repair and strengthening of RC structures: causes of deterioration, strength assessment, repair materials and methods; Presetressed concrete structures and post-tensioned slabs.
