Pharmaceutical Technology II (PHTC833)

Description

This course covers the manufacture of solid dosage forms and the basic principles of drug delivery as well as major techniques used for herbal preparations. Implemented into it are also experimental drug delivery systems and current trends in the manufacture of drug delivery systems. The course includes the study of e.g. powders, tablets, capsules, suppositories. As well as aerosols and inhalation products, microparticles and microcapsules. Physicochemical principles concerning the preparation and properties of the dosage forms. Preparation techniques for chemotherapeutics. Stability testing, processing of plant products and herbal extracts, including freeze drying and microcapsulation. Packaging material (plastics and glass). Good manufacturing practice regulations and quality assurance. The course involves as well industrial operations concerned with the manufacture of pharmaceutical products: aspects relevant for plant construction; heat transfer, evaporation, drying, refrigeration, distillation, extraction, crystallization, filtration and centrifugation, mixing and agitation.
