Numerical Methods and Advanced Statistics - Offered to all 10th semester Majors (CIG 1001)

Description

This Course is offered to all 10th semester Majors
This course focuses on problem-solving methods for civil engineering applications using spreadsheets and commercial software packages for matrix algebra and mathematical computations, such as MATLAB and Mathematica. Students will be required to systematically formulate several civil engineering problems and develop their own solution algorithms using the commercial software packages. The course also focuses on statistical analysis of imprecise data and the estimation of physical parameters from data with uncertainty for civil engineering applications. It contributes to the knowledge and skills of engineering science and design required from the civil engineers by selecting from the following topics: Data models, problem formulation, and solution algorithm;, Macro-programming using spreadsheets and commercial software packages; Solving linear and nonlinear algebraic equations; Numerical integration and differentiation; Roots of equations, optimization, and curve fitting; Solving differential equations; Statistical distributions, random variables, and sampling procedures; Methods of data analysis; Interpolation and filtering; Data and parameter covariance; Linear programming by simplex method; Linear and nonlinear least squares; Estimation theory; Testing of hypotheses; Experiment design; Regression analysis and Correlation.
