Design for social and educational purposes

This research group looks at design which has a strong social and educational orientation. This does not exclude the commercialisation of projects – on the contrary –, but the outcome should be for a social, educational or humanitarian benefit. We are particularly interested in participatory design research methodologies where the end-users are genuinely involved in the design development in order that appropriate and sustainable outcomes are achieved. Sustainable refers to both environmental and economic sustainability, and means that the project should continue and exist and grow once the designer's involvement is completed. What is meant by social, educational and humanitarian? This refers to design which enhances the mental and physical well-being, access to information and communication, health, mobility, educational empowerment, literacy and numeracy, creative and sporting opportunities of individuals and groups for whom these basic needs are difficult to meet, for whatever reason.
