Mr. Iwai Fumio, the Japanese Ambassador to Cairo, visited the German University in Cairo (GUC) in a move that underscores the deepening strategic cooperation between Japan and GUC. He was welcomed by Prof. Dr. Ashraf Mansour, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and Prof. Dr. Yasser Hegazy, President of the University.

During the meeting, both sides explored a broad and ambitious agenda for collaboration. Key areas of discussion included student exchange programs, technical and artistic workshops, design, sports, culture, as well as science and technology. These conversations reflect a shared vision of equipping students and researchers with a global perspective, while integrating Japanese expertise in innovation and industrial know-how.

Following their bilateral talks, Ambassador Iwai joined President Hegazy on a guided tour of GUC’s Integrated Printing Services Centre, a state-of-the-art facility developed in partnership with Canon Japan. There, he was briefed on the center’s advanced capabilities, including its role in supporting both academic research and production-level technology.

The visit builds upon a well-established history of cooperation: back in 2019, former Ambassador Masaki Noki participated in the inauguration of GUC’s “Centers of Excellence” dedicated to localizing industrial and production technologies. These centers include the Africa Manufacturing & Technology Transfer Centre, Solar Energy City, the Tooling Design & Manufacturing Centre, and the Integrated Printing Services Centre.

In his remarks, Ambassador Iwai highlighted that this renewed engagement with the university reaffirms Japan’s strong commitment to supporting education, innovation, and capacity-building in Egypt. He emphasized the importance of university-industry synergies — noting that by combining GUC’s academic strengths with Japanese technological leadership, the partnership can generate practical programs that prepare students for the evolving demands of the global labor market.
