GUC Celebrates 100th-anniversary celebrations of DAAD and 25 years of the DAAD Alumni Association

The German University in Cairo (GUC), the biggest German Transnational Education (TNE) University across the globe, celebrated a significant milestone with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) - 100 years of DAAD and 25 years of the DAAD Alumni Association in Egypt. This occasion was marked by a visit from a high-ranking German delegation, led by H.E. Amb. Jürgen Schulz, German Ambassador to Egypt, and included representatives from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and DAAD. 

 

Welcoming the Distinguished Guests:

Prof. Dr. Ashraf Mansour ,Chairman of the Board of Trustees of GUC and Prof. Dr. Yasser Hegazy, President of GUC extended a warm welcome to the esteemed delegation, which included:

  • H.E. Amb. Jürgen Schulz – German Ambassador to Egypt
  • Prof. Dr. Slim Abdennadher – President, German International University (GIU)
  • Dr. Kai Sicks – DAAD Secretary-General
  • Dr. Lisette Andree – Head of Division, European Higher Education Area Internationalization, BMBF
  • Prof. Dr. Amira Abdel-Motaal – President, DAAD Alumni Association (DAV) in Egypt
  • Dr. Ebaa ElHosary – President, AvH Alumni in Egypt

From the German International University we welcomed Mr. Julius Georg Luy, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of GIU and Dr. Slim Abdennadher, President of German International University (GIU)

 

Celebrating 100 Years of DAAD & 25 Years of DAAD Alumni Association:

As part of the celebrations marking 100 years since the founding of DAAD and 25 years since the establishment of the DAAD Alumni Association (DAV) in Egypt, the event highlighted the ongoing collaboration between Germany and Egypt in higher education.

Prof. Dr. Amira Abdel-Motaal, President of DAV in Egypt, emphasized the vital role played by DAAD in shaping academic and professional careers. The association was originally founded by Prof. Dr. Ashraf Mansour 25 years ago, who remains its Honorary President for life.

 

DAAD-AA Surplus Scholarships Hand-out to Top-Ranked Students:

During the visit, GUC celebrated its top-ranked students, awarding 690 scholarships funded by the German Foreign Ministry in collaboration with DAAD. These scholarships underscore Germany's commitment to supporting academic excellence and fostering future leaders in Egypt.

 

Inauguration of the "Artificial Intelligence in Action" Conference:

GUC also hosted the opening of the largest AI conference on campus: "Applications of Artificial Intelligence in Science and Education". Organized in collaboration with the DAAD Alumni Association and the German Foundation Von Humboldt, the conference explored AI-driven advancements in education and research, emphasizing its role in shaping the future.

 

GUC Junior Talent Innovation Center:

Recognizing the importance of nurturing young talent, GUC has established the Junior Talent Innovation Center, offering programs designed to inspire and educate students across different age groups:

  • Sieger Explorer (Ages 4–16): A hands-on workshop series simplifying complex scientific concepts in chemistry, physics, and mathematics, while also introducing programming, arts, and music to ignite curiosity among children.
  • Junior Talents (Ages 16–18): A program designed to help high school students explore academic interests and gain insight into GUC’s diverse study programs.
  • Genius Getaway Day Field Trip: An interactive educational experience for school students, combining theoretical and practical learning to enhance their academic understanding.

With this visit, GUC continues to strengthen its academic ties with Germany while reaffirming its mission to inspire and develop the next generation of innovators and leaders.
