Reimagining Space: Form and Materiality to Curate CoSpaces in Berlin

At GIU Berlin Campus (from 15th to 24th of July)

Lamis Abdullah

"Reimagining Space: Form and Materiality to Curate CoSpaces" workshop aimed to transform the existing Bikers Market in the GIU Campus into an eclectic coworking space. This transformation involved experimenting with materiality in interior forms, spaces, and furniture to create a unique and sustainable design.

Key Highlights

1. Project Objective: The main aim was to revitalize the Bikers Market by turning it into a coworking space with an eclectic style. This involved experimenting with different materials and design concepts to create a dynamic and functional environment.

2. Material Experimentation: Students tested, iterated, and experimented with various materials and design concepts. They created mock-ups or prototypes to visualize how these elements work together before finalizing the design.

3. Sustainable Materials: The workshop introduced students to sustainable materials, focusing on eco-friendly options such as reclaimed wood, recycled materials, plants, green walls, living partitions, and biophilic design elements. Natural materials like wood, brick, and bamboo will also be incorporated to reduce environmental impact.

4. Industrial Aesthetic: The design embraced an industrial aesthetic, creating a raw and authentic backdrop for the coworking space. This aesthetic added a unique charm and provide an interesting contrast with modern design elements.

5. Eclectic Style: The workshop demonstrated how combining old and new elements can create a unique and eclectic style, adding character and telling a story within the space.

6. Focal Points: Students learned to create and design focal points within the space, such as statement pieces of furniture, art installations, architectural features, and other design elements that stand out.

7. Flexible Work Areas: The design process incorporated flexible work areas using modular furniture and movable partitions. This allowed for different work zones that can be easily reconfigured to accommodate both collaborative and individual work styles.

Conclusion:

The outcome of the "Reimagining Space: Form and Materiality to Curate CoSpaces" workshop was a small-scale model showing the transformation of the Bikers Market into an eclectic coworking space. Students developed furniture prototypes that represent the design concept and experiment with different materials to complement the design. Visual illustrations were presented to convey the overall look and design theme, showcasing the unique blend of old and new, sustainable materials, and flexible workspaces.
