From October 25th to October 27th, GUC hosted the “3-Days Winter School: Pharmacogenomics at the Heart of Personalized Medicine: what is trending?” is funded by DAAD-BMBF project as a German Egyptian collaborative work with the German Partner Institutions: Prof. Dr. Ulrike Stein, Head of Translational Oncology of Solid Tumors lab, Experimental and Clinical Research Center, Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin and Max-Delbruck Center for Molecular Medicine, Berlin and from the Egyptian side Dr. Hend M. El Tayebi, Associate Professor, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Faculty of Pharmacy and Biotechnology - GUC.

The aim of the winter school was to raise awareness of younger generations for the importance of the science of pharmacogenomics and how it plays a crucial role in the implementation of precision and personalized medicine in the near future in many disease areas. The participants tackled many issues including the importance of pharmacogenomics from different perspectives and its role in different types of cancer such as breast, liver, colorectal as well pediatric oncology, gene therapy, microbiome, autoimmunity and neurodegenerative diseases such as multiple sclerosis. In addition, the workshop attendees also discussed how pharmacogenomics influences the decisions of surgical oncologists.

This event was the first in Egypt to highlight and correlate the relationship of pharmacogenomics to personalized medicine. It is considered to be a solid foundation for the establishment of German-Egyptian Pharmacogenomics joint projects. These kind of projects are of strategic perspectives creating several opportunities for the GUC to contribute to Egypt Vision 2030 for sustainable development with a great emphasis on studying the Egyptian genome in the health pillar.
