Dr. Mahmoud Momtaz

In January 2021, Dr. Mahmoud Momtaz was appointed as the Chairman of the Egyptian Competition Authority (ECA), and this is based on decision No. 640 of 2020 by the Minister of Trade and Industry Nevine Gamea.

He had also an international work experience as he spent two years at the World Bank headquarters in Washington D.C as Private Sector Specialist/Competition Expert.  

Previously he served at ECA (Egyptian Competition Authority) from 2008 until 2018 where his last post was the Director of the Competition Policy Department in addition to heading the Case Handling Department. In this position, he led numerous important cases covering a wide range of sectors. Moreover, he participated in drafting many recommendations to amend laws and Government decisions that hindered competition and market contestability.

Additionally he had an academic teaching experience as a lecturer of Competition Law & Economics at both Hamburg University - Germany and Cairo University, Egypt.

Dr. Mahmoud received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Hamburg, Germany in 2018 and his degree was in Competition Law & Economics. Prior that he earned his M.Sc. degree in International Business from the German University in Cairo as well as his B.Sc.
