Global Grad Show in Dubai Displays 150 projects For A Better World

The seventh edition of the Global Grad Show was held in Dubai on November 8 under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Latifa Bint Mohammed Bin Rashid Al- Maktoum, President of the Culture and Arts Authority and member of the Dubai Council, to review 150 innovative academic projects submitted by 114 universities in 53 countries, to improve lives, support communities and protect the planet.

 

For the second consecutive year, GUC graduates of the Faculty of Applied Arts have participated in the Global Grad Show in Dubai. Following are the names of the GUCians and their projects:

  • Mariam Hamed Hussein, Product Designer.  She created communication tools for deaf-mute children in Egypt and underdeveloped countries.
  • All Elhamady, Graphic and Interactive Designer. She designed a “Step-Up Society” application to provide multiple tools to report sexual harassment.
  • Mai el-Gammal, Media Designer. She created an application for expats to provide a database to help people through difficulties they may face in their new locations.
  • Farah Barakat, Product Designer.  She created a robot (NYMO) that encourages self-care amongst the elderly.
  • Shefa Masr team: Madiha Elshamaa, Noor Alasmar, Sara Eladawy.  The team designed a system that provides cost-effective access to enhance quality health services for underserved communities. 
  • Hanya Hammad, Product Designer.   Her project was an Adolescence Career Discovery. 

 

This is the first Global Grad Show to be held since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. This year's edition, which received applications from graduates in 464 universities (a 70% increase from 2020), focused on the field of health care, safety and emergency, while readiness for the future becomes a key denominator among production and consumption, community, integration, inclusion, education and awareness.

 

One of the most prominent initiatives of the Global Grad Show, is the MENA Grad Show, launched in 2020, which showcases the best social impact innovative projects in the fields of science, design and architecture, by students from universities in the region.  This year’s exhibition includes 60 projects by 78 students from 29 universities across 10 countries. Among the selected projects 27 are UAE universities and 80% of students are female, reflecting the impact of regional government initiatives to stimulate innovation, education and entrepreneurship among women.

 

Some highlight of these projects include a device for producing organic super-foods at home; Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation – UAE; An application for organizing dementia patients' routine and providing treatment; The American University in Cairo - Egypt; An e-reader application to assist people with dyslexia to read and understand; The American University of Sharjah - UAE; A household filter to reduce the release of micro plastics into the ocean; Middle East Technical University - Turkey; A magnetic skin that allows quadriplegics to control their surroundings; University of Jeddah – KSA.
