The GUC held an "online" workshop to track the latest findings of the PVT-RESyst project, which won the German International Federal Prize "African German Innovation" GAIIA in 2018.  The project was implemented in the scope of solar energy use, storage and utilizing it in operating air conditions, heaters and electricity generation in homes, with Egyptian-German cooperation.

The German African Innovation Award, offered by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, is considered an important component of its strategy in order to support and develop scientific research in the countries of the continent, and aims to nurture creative thinkers in those countries to find innovative solutions to many of the continent's problems.

On the Egyptian side, the workshop included Dr. Tarek Khalil, Professor in the Department of Physics at the Faculty of Engineering and Materials Science at the university  and Dr. Thomas Lofer, Professor in the Architecture Program, and the participation from the German side included Dr. Wolfgang Molenkov of the Stuttgart University of Technology for Applied Sciences, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research BMBF, and the German Aerospace Center DLR.

The workshop sessions witnessed a discussion of the adaptability of thermal photovoltaic complexes to increase the share of renewable energy and provide heating, cooling and electrical energy production in building systems, the potential and challenges of new PVT technology and its entry into the local market as well as the future of solar energy in Egypt.
