GUC Architecture Workshop "Towards Vibrant Places"

The Architecture and Urban Design Department in the German University in Cairo is hosting a participatory workshop in collaboration with We c-design Studio to develop a design-built workshop supported by US Embassy in Cairo as well as Egyptian Food bank, as main stakeholders. The workshop is running from Sunday 04th of April to Sunday 11th of April 2021 (Excluding Wednesday and Friday).

 

30 students from GUC are participating in this workshop  (working in groups of 5 to 6 students) will have the opportunity to understand the basic principles of Tactical urbanism and to develop actions in realistic urban scenarios based on this important action. The students will be designing a public open space between the buildings of the social housing In front of the GUC. They will also be using wood pallets provided by the Egyptian Food Bank as the main design element for their proposals. By the end of the Workshop, one project from with be selected from the different proposal to be implement by the end of June.

 

On the first day of the workshops, students went for a site visit to the targeted open space next to the Egyptian Food Bank to get a better understanding of the area, investigate the users, the traffic flow near the site, and to document through pictures and sketches. After that, students had a meeting with the managers of the Egyptian Food Bank to get a better understanding of the expected outcome from their side as sponsors as well as getting exact information of the dimensions and strength of the wooden pallets that will be used in the design construction.
