GUC hosted a webinar from Washington DC by the CEO at the International Monetary Fund- IMF and former Egyptian Minister of Investment Dr. Mahmoud Mohi el-Din on “The Global Political Economy: Risks and Opportunities”

Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin started by discussing a global perspective about the COVID-19 pandemic and whether it was anticipated or due to the neglect of Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3) that has to do with global health and wellbeing. He outlined the megatrends shaping the global economy in the future. These included demographic shifts, investment in human capital and infrastructure, climate change, amongst others. He also discussed how countries could sustain the environmental benefits ensuing of the COVID-19 global pandemic. On the Egyptian level, he discussed the economic policies and the emergency response package that the Egyptian government has enacted following the Coronavirus pandemic.

He addressed how countries should localize the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the extent to which the pandemic could hinder economic development and recovery. He also discussed the socio-economic policies that countries such as Egypt can use to counteract the economic downturn post-COVID-19. Finally, he discussed the importance of digitalization in the recovery process.

Prof Dr Noha El-Bassiouny, Vice Dean for Academic Affairs. Professor of Marketing and Head of Marketing Department and Dr. Dina Yousri, Assistant Professor of Economics and Statistics moderated the session that was organized by Ambassador Nihad Zikry, Director of International Policy Planning.
