On Saturday, May 7th 2016, the GUC faculty of Pharmacy and Biotechnology held a workshop entitled “GUC-UULM workshop on smart materials in Chem/Bio sensing’’.

This workshop is part of the DAAD-BMBF funded project ‘’ Design and application of molecularly imprinted polymers as drug delivery vehicles’’, and in collaboration with Ulm University, specifically with the Institute of Analytical and Bio-analytical Chemistry headed by Prof. Boris Mizaikoff. It aimed at familiarizing the attendees with the molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) technology, the new strategies used for synthesizing and understanding molecularly imprinted materials. How the polymers could be formulated so that they would have stimuli responsive behavior. Also, a lot of applications for these polymers were discussed, such as, their use in extraction of natural products from plant materials, their use in sensors, targeted and controlled drug delivery as well as their use as micro-robotic systems. Finally it ended with presenting the work of the PhD students from the, Pharmaceutical Chemistry department, Faculty of Pharmacy and Biotechnology.

Worth to mention that the attendees represented the Institute of Analytical and Bio-analytical Chemistry, Ulm University, the Laboratory of Pharmaceutics and Bio-pharmaceutics, University of Geneva, along with several speakers from GUC both faculties  of Pharmacy  and Biotechnology and Engineering. As well as students, academic staff and anyone interested to know more about the topic.
